Taco Seasoning without the Nasties!!!

Do you like to cut corners and make a quick meal? Don’t we all.

Totacoday in our house it was Taco Tuesday. It is quick and easy and on a  night when kids need to get back out the door for an extra-curricula activity, it allows the dinners to be staggered.

But have you ever stopped and had a look at what is actually in the taco seasoning packet? I hadn’t taken much notice until recently, but basically it’s loaded with salt & MSG like ingredients. Below is a snippet from one brand I found. Don’t even want to think about what that preservative might be!

This discovery coincided with trying to find ways to make savings and I thought 2 packets of seasoning adds to around $3-$4 depending on what brands are on the shelf, so perhaps with all the spices that already fill the cupboard I could make it myself and it be a cleaner and healthier choice. So that’s exactly what I did.

It is very straightforward and can be pre-made and stored in an airtight container ready to use on taco night. All you need to do is mix all the ingredients together.

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons hot chilli powder

1 1/2 teaspoons paprika

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon oregano

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional) (See my beware note below)

1 pinch chilli flakes (optional)

Beware – If you don’t like things too hot just beware of the cayenne pepper. Both times I have made it my pinch has been much more than a pinch so had quite a bite to it, so beware of trying to do a pinch out of the spice shaker bottles, perhaps shake them in the lid first. You could also trade the hot chilli powder for a milder one and leave out the chilli flakes to make it milder.

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Store leftover seasoning in an airtight container.

If you are using this spice in mince for taco or burritos, brown the 500 grams mince  then add 1-2 tablespoons and about 1/2 cup of water. If needed add more water or seasoning.

Initially when you taste this spice it is quite different in the mince compared to the bought mix as there is so much less salt, but once your taco is made it is delicious!!! A family winner for me with some good anti-oxidants and much cleaner eating.

Enjoy!!!
